Many EDM fans already know the name Cazzette. The Swedish duo made up of Sebastian Furrer and Alexander Bjorklund, who joined forces in 2011 and introduced a unique sound they called “dubhouse.” Making a huge splash with their remix of Avicii’s Sweet Dreams the boys have been growing in popularity ever since. In 2012 releasing their debut album Eject which gave us the hit single Beam Me Up, and now another huge track Sleepless which has been climbing up the charts. We got a chance to sit down with Cazzette and discuss the sound of their new track, releasing their album exclusively on Spotify and what is next for 2014.
How did you come together as a duo?
We met online a few years ago through a forum for producers. We quickly found a great workflow and since then we have been working together.
How long have you been producing music?
About 9 years each.
Your most recent release “Sleepless” has been quite the hit track coming in at #9 on Spotify’s Viral 50 chart, #42 on the Billboard Hot Dance/Electronic chart and 5 million plus Spotify streams. Can you tell us a little bit about making the track?
This track was really fun to work on. We instantly found the right elements for The High’s great lyrics and vocoded acapella. The idea itself took us a few hours to figure out, but the final result took about six months. It was really fun at first, then really frustrating, then really fun again towards the end. We are super proud and really happy with the result.
The track has its own unique sound and is somewhat a departure from your signature sound. Do you consciously try to make tracks different and unique from not only what other producers are making but your past tracks?
We like to move forward and explore new sounds. We would rather risk it and try to create songs in genres we are not familiar with than do the same kind of songs over and over again.
It seems streaming music platforms are slowly becoming the main form of music consumption but some artists are still trying to fight it. You guys took a unique and forward thinking approach and released your debut album back in 2012 exclusively on Spotify. Can you tell us about your decision to do that?
As for our tracks, we like to try out new stuff. We quickly realized that streaming really is the future of consuming music and we wanted to be a part of that.
Where do you see your music careers going from here, what are some goals or aspirations?
We really just want to keep doing what we are doing, but maybe advance our live performance and do bigger shows with more production. Musically, we are in a really good and comfortable place right now where we get to do exactly what we want.
What is it like working with Ash Pournouri’s PRMD Records?
Really great. We have a good work flow and all three of us work well together. He is an important part of Cazzette.
Who would you love to collaborate with on a track?
Diplo, Daft Punk, Justice, Jay-Z, Kaytranada, to name a few.
What is Cazzette listening to?
A lot of deep house. But as always, we have lots of love for hip-hop.
What is next in 2014?
We have so many new unreleased songs that we actually can’t decide which one to put out next. But there is more coming.
You can catch Cazzette at Vessel in San Francisco on June 20th and EDC Las Vegas on June 21st. Also check out their lyric video for Sleepless below.
